I want the chorus of those who are satisfied with this vacuum to be connected. I already had two batteries, Makita, and he sits largely unused. This is more of a heads-up tools to new Makita BGA452 LXT. They are expensive, very expensive and I buy only if the settlement offer. There was the battery when you buy 12 different tools, such as BGA452. They are somewhat similar instruments that differ from the number of letters - BTD141, BTD144, the effects of the two pilots. So the first part of prudence.

I purchased this combo kit approx 2 years ago, and these tools are powerful workhorses. I have a fencing company and they get used nearly every day. I am still using the original set of batteries that came with the kit. Still getting full productive use of the tools from these great batteries. (I have other brands,-- DeWalt, Milwaukee, Bosch, and I'm sorry to say they can't measure up to the Makita.) Any of my employees who use these tools are equally as impressed as I am, and are quick to grab the Makita over the others available to them. I would recommend this kit to anyone who is concerned with having a high quality, dependable set of cordless tools.

Best cordless I have ever used, May 17, 2010

I have only owned a few tools in my life, but these by far surpass any I have ever used. The tools have more power, longer battery life, and are better quality.

I used the impact driver and circular saw (mainly) to build a fence around my parents yard, and it was a snap using one battery for it all. I would drive what I needed, then switch the battery to the saw and cut. The battery lasts all day for the impact driver, but runs out much faster with the work load of the circular saw. Another reviewer commented that you shouldn't use the saw for more than 15 minutes of cutting at a time. I agree, give it some rest, but the battery will run for at least 4 of those, so an hour of actual cutting hardwoods without dying.

All in all, definitely worth the purchase. If you need cordless, get Makita LXT. And HURRY, you can still get a free tool if you buy it now and use the rebate!

Responding to the prior comment about the user not having a battery fit with his existing Makita battery:
This is because he was trying to use the white 1.5Ah Makita battery (slim pack) in a tool that requires the more powerful (and larger and more $$$$) 3.0Ah battery. SOME tools can take both, and other tools can only take the 3.0Ah battery due to their higher power requirements and are thus keyed that way.

Nice saw with one major problem, February 1, 2009
I've owned many cordless reciprocating saws over the years and this would definitely be at the top of the list if it weren't for the fact that after using it for a short time the blades fall out while sawing! At first I thought I just didn't have them locked in properly, but I tried again several times, each time making sure it was completely locked in and it keeps falling out!!! This is exremely frustrating. Apparently I'm not the only one who's had this problem. I've tried different blades, but it just won't hold them. Otherwise it seems great! Good size, not too heavy, work light and plenty of power. I'm going to try to contact Makita to see if they have any suggestions.

Great saw - get either the BSS610 or the BSS611, October 17, 2008
I'm a big Makita fan, so this may be just a bit biased: I like this saw a lot. This saw is very similar to Makita's BSS610. The differences between the two are hard to find -- and Makita doesn't always tell you what the differences are. The 610 has three additional features that the 611 does not: a blade brake, a light and a better 45-50 degree adjustment. The 610 comes with a 24 tooth blade and the 611 with a 16 tooth blade; both blades are otherwise of similar quality. The price difference between the two on Amazon.com is about $55 (the 610 being more expensive) Both saws appear to have the same power, run time and handling -- either one is a great addition. (I opted for the BSS610 because of the blade brake.)

Great Little Saw, February 2, 2009
This is a great deal for the money if you already have the batteries and charger. This saw does not have the light which I miss and didn't come with a rip fence or a case; it's a light duty saw. If it's your only saw, you'll be sorry; it just doesn't have the torque of a corded saw and will choke in a slight bind while cutting plywood sheets or pressure treated 4x stock where the blade's burried; situations where even a homeowner corded saw will power through. If the blade is touching your work, the saw can't start. It just grunts coming up short of enough torque to start the cut. Anything but a perfect cutting angle in a perfectly straight cut will bind and stop the saw.
The trigger safety interlock is aggravating! I buy pro model corded saws to eliminate that dumb switch, but you need it in a battery saw if you store it with the battery installed; like everyone does. I have incredibly large hands and still find that trigger interlock a stretch to reach; ergonomically, it's in the wrong place for a comfortable grip. There is no charge level indication unless you put the battery on the charger; then you can only tell if it's > or < 80%.
All that said, I really do love the saw and find myself grabbing it first. The cut line on the table is dead on accurate; first saw I've ever had that was. It's light and fast and under normal conditions you can't outwork the batteries. I framed and sheathed two 48' gable ends and cut 2x4's and 5/8" plywood all day. I changed batteries twice and the battery was recharged well before the one in use died; I consider that completely acceptable run time.
I wouldn't expect to use it for long rips (straight or beveled) or for anything greater than 2x, but for anything short of full-on framing, I'll grab this saw out of my truck first; it's just awesome not to have to deal with cords and extension cords!

I bought this mostly for the batteries as I already have multiple Makita drills/ batteries/ chargers. It works. Does what it is supposed to and fits my ham fists well. Better chuck than my old 6213D.

Seems like something is wrong when it costs almost the same for two batteries or buying this drill kit.

I've had this drill for 2.5 years now. I am NOT a construction or tradesman - I'm a DIY homeowner who appreciates a quality tool.

I was originally considering the bigger brother of this tool, the 6337DWDE - I chose the 12V variety b/c the torque numbers were very close to each other.

The batteries on this drill have held up very well. I appreciate that the drill can sit in on the shelf of my workbench for weeks on end and still work when I pull the drill out of the case. One battery has never been used at all - it showed when I needed it on a job (poor runtime). I anticipate after a couple charge / discharge cycles that it will fall in line with my other one.

In the event that my second battery does not pull through (my fault - complete lack of use) - I may even buy another one of these sets instead of 2 batteries. This drill has been good to me.

Drivers and long bits work well. Small bits are darn near impossible to get out of holder. Drill bits, already broke three small ones. Case, pushing long bits in broke the plastic clips. Was a good price, I'll pass next time. :-(

Important to realize that lithium-ion powered drills have only been out for a few years and some manufacturers produced their first lithium-ion drills in 2009. The technology is changing and the drills get new features or refinements and a drill that was top of the pack in 2006 or 2007 may provide only average performance when compared to the new drills available in 2010. This is the case with Makita that had an early lead that has been whittled down over the past couple years.

We use a lot of drills and using the new lithium-ion battery models we have encountered many brands that are overly sensitive to overheating of the battery and cut power continually while trying to make holes 3" diameter or larger. The end result is it takes twice as long to cut the holes and the lack of continuous torque also is a bit unnerving. Almost all cordless drills are good at driving screws or making small diameter holes but when it comes to the tougher jobs the drills with the 3-speed gear boxes come out on top. This makes for a select group of Makita (BHP451), DeWalt (DCD970), and Ridgid.

We were using the drill on a job where we needed to make a series of 2-1/2" holes in stucco and wood using the new Blue Boar TCT stucco bits (which work incredibly well)and were using both Milwaukee and DeWalt lithium-ion drills and decided to give the Makita a try. We had used Makita in the past when they were about the only company making lithium-ion drill and wanted to see if the 2 speed gearbox provided power on par with the DeWalt DCD970 drill and it falls far short. The Makita has a more sensitive overload setup than the DeWalt but it is not as bad as the Milwaukee M18 which is pretty touchy. The end result is that the gearing is not right for large hole saws or even self-feed bits in wood with the stalling quite apparent and much longer times to bore the holes.

The Makita chuck tends to loosen up when there is a lot of vibration using a hole cutter in hard materials. No problems with small drill bits like the Hitachi chuck but not nearly as good as the DeWalt self-tightening chuck. In these situations it is important to watch and not accidentally drop the hole saw and abor as the chuck can loosen quite a bit before you even finish with the hole.

The feel of the hand grip is good and on par with the Milwaukee M18 but not as good as the new Bosch drills (which also have the least runout of any drill we have used). The drill seems to lug and require more effort to bore through touch materials so I doubt the drill produces the torque as stated by Makita. All the specs are pretty meaningless anyway with the lithium-ion battery packs as the power cutoff mechanism prevents the user from getting anywhere near 100% of the power from the drill. This is offset in large part by starting slow and using the lowest speed range of the drill with the 2-speed drills. With 3 speed gearbox equipped drills the middle speed range works the best with a combination of high torque and high RPM for smoother cutting.

Hard to appreciate the difference the middle speed range provides in usability of the drill for jobs that in the past demanded the use of a 15 amp stud drill. I have used the DeWalt DCD970 to make 6-1/4" holes in Hardie siding over plywood backing and the drill was up to the task. Naturally I used a Blue Boar tungsten carbide hole cutter and not a bi-metal hole saw. With a Lenox or Milwaukee bi-metal hole saw I would have smoked the drill and doubt very much that I could have finished the hole with just one battery. Using the right hole cutter makes all the difference in the world.

The high speed setting is also 25% slower than other drills we use and this comes into play when drilling holes in metal. Cobalt drills help a lot but it is another aspect where the Makita comes up short compared to competitors' drills.

Recharge times if you use the full size batteries is going to be more than 30 minutes and average as lithium-ion battery packs go. You can get faster recharge times with the half size battery but that really defeats the purpose of having a drill of like this.

When my almost-3-year-old Makita LXT hammer drill stopped doing what it's supposed to, I weighted the options: send it to Makita for repair and have the gears replaced (expensive!) or buy a new one (probably MORE expensive!). When I found this bare tool on Amazon, I couldn't believe my luck. I already have 3 18v batteries and charger...so this was a no-brainer. It arrived in just a few days and I was up and running again. It runs smooth, it's lighter than my 451z. The only difference besides the weight is that the older one, the 451, had 3 gears and the new models only have 2. Makita told me the reason for this change was too many people were stripping the 3rd gear, using this CORDLESS tool as a heavy-duty construction drill, which it's not. So they got rid of the 3rd gear, making the drill much smaller and lighter. The best part...after I got this drill, I found my receipts to the older drill and it was BARELY still within warranty. Makita fixed it for FREE and shipped it to me for FREE. Now I have 2 working hammer drills from my favorite company. 5 stars!

I have owned the Makita impact drivers for two years and have been very happy with them. The batteries are light, powerful and seem to hold their charge well. One battery that went bad was quickly replaced by Makita without question. So, when I needed to replace my venerable Porter Cable I looked to Makita, but did not need an additional charger or batteries as I already had three. So, this "tool only" package was ideal and at ~$60 it could not be beat. The tool has LOTS of power and a handy LED light too. Quite pleased overall.

Neither Makita nor Amazon note that this tool requires hex shank drill bits to function as drill. Neither Lowes nor Home Depot or the Ace near my home carry these bits and for good reason: no other tool requires them. I can only get them from Amazon. I think not being explicit about the need for Makita's proprietary drill bit sets is careless at best and deceptive at worst. I put this on my wish list and must now return it while explaining the reasoning to my sister who thought she was doing me a favor. I'm not about to replace my collection of carbide tipped drill bits I use for boat building and maintenance.

This IS a drill-driver. It just operates in a more user-friendly way than an old-fashioned chuck. The box CLEARLY ILLUSTRATES AND DESCRIBES the "Quick-Change 1/4" Hex-Shank" method of accepting bits. Lucky me, I bought mine at Ace Hardware on Black Friday for $80 + tax. It came with a plastic storage box, a nice canvas holster, and a canvas 65-pc accessory kit with every bit you could want, including hex bit drills. The canvas accessory bit kit fits nicely in the plastic storage case along with the drill, the holster, and the charger. It is light-weight and very compact (great for tight spots). Plenty of power. Has a nice LED light that illuminates very well, and stays on for about 15 seconds after trigger release: Bump the trigger to turn it on, use the light to locate your work within the 15 seconds (or bump it again), and begin drilling or driving. It even has a 1-year warrranty on the battery and a THREE YEAR WARRANTY on the rest. Mine came with only one battery, but it recharges fairly quickly (less than an hour).

I have been very happy with this purchase. The battery is long lasting and it has plenty of power. The one drawback is it only accepts hex drill bits as it does close down on the round bits. With the number of hex drill bits it isn't a real problem. I would recommend this drill as its small size is misleading for the big job it does.

NOWHERE in the description of this item does it mention this fact. The documentation that came with the item did not mention this fact. Nothing would alert a person that an extra, not-included part was needed to function as a drill. I returned it and bought a Craftsman.

I've had this drill nearly two years and it has proved to be very powerful and reliable, plus the battery seems to last forever. I've drilled through 1/4" thick metal, through 25-year-old treated oak fence boards and driven 3" long screws into ancient barn supports (think petrified wood) as well as more normal things. I bought this drill after my electric one died (couldn't handle the really hard stuff and burned out). I had doubts about a cordless drill, but not anymore. I don't use it every day. I'm not a contractor, just an ordinary female person running a little farm, but it doesn't seem to mind neglect in between uses.

At first, I wondered if the weight would be a problem, but it hasn't been because the drill is so well balanced. When the battery finally wore down after many, many months of no use interspersed with very hard use, the other battery took over instantly, still holding a full charge after sitting unused for just as long (not in the charger--it's not supposed to be left in the charger) and the original one recharged in under an hour.

I like having a case as I can store all the bits and such along with the drill. The drill has multiple power settings, the ability to switch seamlessly between driving and extracting which comes in handy when extracting the bit from a metal hole, and can switch between screw/drill settings. And thank heaven it doesn't need a chuck key. It's very easy and satisfying to use. Oh, and I use it to plant bulbs, stir paint and drill 1" holes in railroad ties used to build raised gardens. It has definitely made my life easier. I would recommend it to anyone.

This is a powerful and useful drill. I have only used this for medium work thus far, but it worked for 6 hours driving several hundred screws on a deck project and the battery showed no signs of tiring. It has a switch that quickly changes between drill and screw mode that saves time. The charger charges in slightly less than an hour.

My only disappointment is that I have not figured how to get the charger into the kit carrying box.

This drill/driver is fantastic! It has torque and power to spare, long battery life, easy and quick recharging, and great balance/feel for an 18V. Haven't had it long enough to comment on battery life. It drives 3 1/2" deck screws into treated lumber with ease. Also, has a light touch to the trigger for working with smaller bolts. The perfect balance makes it seem much lighter than it is, and user fatigue isn't an issue. The case is quite large, but provides plenty of capacity for bits and drivers. A great value.

Makita tools are great. These power tools are strong. The battery charger does the job in 30 minutes!
A couple things bug me about the impact driver:
1) It is challenging to control the trigger to get a nice slow speed - it is too sensitive - would be nice to have two speed ranges - or maybe reduce the max speed.
2) The fwd/rev buttons are a bit too low down onto the grip and get bumped accidentally when my hand is at the top of the grip area.

Makita makes a great 18V impact and hammer drill combo. Best of the cordless combos taht we have used (milwaukee, dewalt, etc.) These tools take a beating day in and day out, rain or shine. The only drawback from perfection are the chargers and batteries. I have had a couple go out but they are used hard every day and definitely outlasted comparable brands.

I have used this tool for 2 months. I feel this is a great combo tool set and I am completely satisfied.
After reading some of the reviews, I was hesitant to order the set but being a very satisfied owner of several Makita tools including earlier generation Makita cordless drills, I decided to give the Combo set a try (even knowing it is Made in China; read on.)
Makita does a great job with ergonomics. The drill is a good manageable weight, has plenty of power, battery life, is well balanced, and does not have any skin pinch points. The trigger and reversing switch are positioned for easy fingertip control (I checked out the competitors and the Makita BHP454 in the combo set had the best fit in my hand.)
The hammer drill is very effective. I was surprised how efficient the hammer drill is at drilling 3/8 inch holes in concrete. I drilled 6 holes in the same time it used to take me to drill one with my older, non impact, cordless drill.
I checked the chuck run out by mounting a 1/2" diameter precision dowel pin in the chuck and measured run out with a 0.0005" increment dial indicator. Run out was less than 0.005" which I figure is very acceptable for a hand held drill.
Regarding being "Made in China". I am generally very ANTI when it comes to Chinese made products. My experience has been that most Chinese products are made with poor quality control, poor heat treatment, inferior components, etc. I have experienced the inferior junk that often comes from China and, after many bad experiences, I have made it a habit to, whenever possible, completely avoid purchasing Chinese Made products. However, knowing Makita's reputation and quality, and working as a Manufacturing Engineer for many years, I have had the experience of working directly with Japanese companies and evaluating their workforce transition to China. What I experienced and I believe this is the case with Makita, if properly done, the product quality does not suffer because components initially come from Japan until such time the China operation can prove they can competently and consistently manufacture quality components. When making this transition, the Japanese are experts at exercising Complete Quality Control so the product is comparable to those coming from Japan.
Amazon is excellent at taking back any product that a customer is not satisfied with so I figure there is no risk to the customer if a product does not perform as advertised.
In summary, this is a fine set and I would not hesitate to recommend purchasing the Combo Set.

I have tried and used every combo kit available (from major manufactures) and in my opinion Makita has the best kit available for the money as of this review. I wanted to replace a well used 14.4 volt Makita combo kit. Living near major tool supply stores is a plus and I was able to actually try all the major manufactures 18 volt kits. I ended up purchasing the Makita LXT218 as it comes with the BPH454 drill.
The feel and weight of the Makita are just right for me, for you folks that think these units are to heavy then opt for the 12 volt models as you most likely don't use them every day nor need the extra torque. The 1.5 amp hour battery models weigh almost as much so if you want an 18v kit buy a kit with a real battery.
I own and use the 10.8v Bosch units it's amazing what the small kits can handle.
I like the extra speed of the BPH454 drill and the torque on the low setting is great. The LEDs on the drill are a plus, they shine the light about even with the drill point at 4" out. I must confess the real work horse for me is the impact driver. The batteries have gone through five or six charges and are lasting longer after each charge. I've been driving 3" screws into framing. The impact driver is faster and lighter than the 14.4v unit and fits a normal mans hand very well, the balance is great with the 3 amp hour battery.
If this kit holds up as well as my 14.4 volt kit has (it's still going strong) then it will be a good return on my investment.

I am a professional technician and use these makitas daily. They really take a beating and the battery lasts a very long time. The batteries only take 45 minutes to charge from fully dead to fully charged and lasts anywhere from 10-14 days with daily use. I only use the impact and keep the other battery on the charger. It works well I go to pick it up after sitting for a week and it works the battery doesnt go dead on its own. Three other techs at the dealership use this exact same kit but payed $100 more from the tool truck. Very compact and powerful. No problems yet. Need to buy a drill bit set with hexes on them to use the drill.

great drill set. I was unsure of the quick release bits, but I bought a small dedicated set to keep with the drill. The hammer drill works great and really does drive screws better than a traditional drill. But, for light screws use the standard drill so you don't overdrive them into your material.

I received the set as a gift, and I liked it fine (almost entirely used the drill/driver, didn't get to use the impact driver) until I had a bit get stuck in it. I was almost unable to remove it - the collar did nothing. I managed to somehow get that bit free, but on a subsequent occasion I had a 1/4" bit get permanently stuck in the tool. I tried pulling the bit free while trying to engage the release collar, and eventually the bit broke off in the tool.
I returned the set after that. I'm assuming mine had some defect. My previous Makita drill gave many years of good service.

A good drill at a good price
"I had purchased the Mikita Impact Driver with the same batteries that this drill uses. The batteries last and charge quickly. Since I use these two tools around the house, having two batteries between the impact and the drill works out fine.

The one thing I have encountered (not sure it is severe enough to call it a complaint) is the grip on the chuck. The chuck is ribbed with small ridges. When tightening the chuck the drill is powerfull enough to spin the chuck in your hand and a couple times I have burned my hand from the friction.

Other than this very small "nit" the drill is great."

"The BTD141 is and updated/improved version of the BTD140. Not much difference but some improved internal parts (slightly higher max torque), slightly different appearance (mainly plastic gearbox shroud), and a different chuck. This chuck allows you to push in a hex bit without pulling out the sleeve. You must still pull out the sleeve to remove the bit.

It's just my luck; a week after I bought this, Makita comes out with the BTD144 brushless impact driver Makita BTD144 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Impact Driver that has a 3 speed power selection, a revolution for impact drivers. Even though it is $100 more (and 100 more in./lbs. max torque) I would have probably sprung for the BTD144. Impact drivers are known for their torque but not for their finesse; the ability to pre-select a power setting would be worth $$ if you use an impact driver a lot.

With this Makita, as with all other impact drivers, you must use skill in the finesse of the trigger switch to control whatever fastener you happen to be driving. As others have said, this tool has loads of torque and if you are not careful you can drive most screws or bolts way past where they should be. I needed some practice feathering the trigger and doing short bursts to finish off a fastener correctly. Getting the right pressure on the trigger is not easy to do while you are driving a big and/or long fastener. Heck, a short or small screw is probably even harder to control; best done with a regular driver anyway.

Makita BTD141 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Impact Driver Kit is loud, but it's supposed to be loud; it's an IMPACT driver.

The case that came with it from Amazon was very large and had space for a Makita hammer drill. This worked out for me since I got a free hammer drill (BHP454Z) through a mail-in rebate promotion when I bought this. It might be too big for you if they are still shipping it with this case."

Good idea but terrible quality
"I like this product for its idea, but the quality of it is terrible the door is very flimsy along with the mesh screen sides. I am not so sure its going to last more than one summer. I have one to two fire a week and the door and sides are warping from the heat. I have only had this product a few weeks. Overall I am happy with it I just wish it was made alittle better. I like how it has the draw to collect the ash."

"Most of the other reviews are very accurate in their descriptions for these tools, what can I add? I used worked in construction several years ago, but currently I only use these tools for destroying/repairing things at home. Obviously these tools are not as powerful as their corded counterparts, but who wants to carry a 50 ft extension cord around wherever you go? These tools are perfect for jobs around the house and have already paid for themselves by solving a few tricky problems... like corroded bolts. The grinder made quick work of cutting the bolts (the grinder came with 2 different types of blades). The reciprocating saw would've probably been easier but it didn't come with metal blades and I didn't feel like going back to the store again.

The battery charger charges in 30 minutes as advertised which is great. The impact driver is really cool since it is able to get into small areas and has quite a bit of torque for such a small tool. The flashlight is bright but I would've preferred just about any other tool instead since I doubt I will ever use it. I haven't used the circular saw yet, but it's time to shine is coming soon! ;-)

The tools all feel very sturdy and well made and you really can't beat the price offered here on Amazon. It looks like the price has gone up since I bought this 2 months ago ($500). Just buying 2 of these tools at the store can set you back around $300 (my dad still likes to buy things at the store). I've used Makita brand tools before and they seem to last a long time. Overall I am very happy with these tools because they meet my needs and situation perfectly."

Nice Set but, poorly packaged
"I just received the Makita LXT702 in the mail today. The tools are great, but the set came poorly packaged in a light cardboard box with pictures of the product on the outside. After opening the box, I discovered that the grinder and one battery were missing. Amazon will exchange the product for a new one, but I am responsible for the return shipping. This box is large and heavy (54 lbs) and is going to cost over $50 to ship back. Do yourself a favor and learn from my mistake. Buy the product locally so you know you will get what you pay for!

Update - Amazon ended up taking care of my problem, and I got a full set sent to me without paying the return postage. I tried to resolve the problem by using the automated process for exchanging items. After several messages back and forth with Amazon Customer Service, I decided to click on the "Call Me" button to speak directly with a Customer Service Representative. My phone rang immediately, and had the problem resolved within 15 minutes. Apparently, when a product arrives missing parts, it is considered defective and Amazon will pay for the return shipping to replace the set.

If you buy the set, just make sure you check the contents before you sign for it. The packaging is really light duty for this heavy set of tools. But for the price, it's worth the wait. I could not find it locally for a price even close to Amazon."

"I bought this 18 volt LXT drive just over a year ago. It's light weight and charge life is great. It drives screws like nothing I've ever seen! A 3" drywall screw can be drive clear through a 2X4. Unfortunately, there's a serious problem. I've now purchased four batteries for this driver and have one left that will hold a charge. If you've checked the battery price, you'll know they aren't in a price range where you can afford to discard them after only a year or less! Charge life is great but battery life is TERRIBLE! I use this driver for home use not commercial, although I do use it more than most homeowners are likely to.

I wish there was a fix for this. I love the driver and would be happy to buy other LXT tools if only I could afford the batteries. Does anyone know of a way around this LXT killer problem?"

"I bought this battery so I would have three batteries in my Makita Combo-pack. I got tired of needing to swap a battery from the other drill when one went dead, and this has solved that problem perfectly. I was even able to find a little space in the case to fit it in (although it's a rather tight fit.) These batteries are great, and they pack a tremendous amount of power. I'll have to see how they hold up in the long term, but right now, I'm very happy with how these batteries hold their charge and how long they keep going."

"Hmm. I don't know what to think about all the negative reviews on the batteries. I bought the drill with the batteries nearly 3 years ago. One of the batteries just died last weekend. The drill has been used heavily for all those 3 years. My husband and I are building a house. I got the drill for myself due to the weight of the drill and it's smallness. Love the drill. Batteries worked great until this past weekend. I don't leave the battery plugged into the charger after it's charged often. Maybe that shortens their life. When the green light flashes and music sounds, I unplug the charger. Is three years a long time with heavy usage..not sure. I don't like the cost of a new one though. Maybe I should just get a new drill. :)"

This Looks & Feels Like the Future, November 13, 2006

"This new driver/drill from Makita is a great piece of work. I bought this unit just days ago, so this review is just an initial impression.

The BDF452HW is super light, easy to handle and has good power. The batteries are physically small, but still pack 18 volts. The L/I batteries have a very flat run-time curve...they stay full power until right at the end of the charge. They recharge in 15 minutes (for real). Makita seems to have capitalized on the advantages of new battery technology and combined it with a well built, smooth, advanced tool.

If you need brute power or a hammer drill, this is not the drill for you. If you want a medium to medium heavy duty drill, this lightweight beauty is close to perfect. I'll update this after several months of use. Right now, I couldn't be more satisfied.

*Update (04/13/07) After using this drill for several months, I still think it is the best drill/driver in this price/usage range. The batteries are excellent and the available power continues to satisfy me. This drill is lightweight, reliable, feels like quality and has the umph to drill even 2" Rock Maple and drive 2" lag screws into the same Rock Maple with no sweat. "I got this drill after I checked it out in a local hardware store. It felt so good in my little hand. My husband's old (ancient) Porter Cable 12 volt is wearing out and we're building a house. Instead of trying to find batteries for his old Porter Cable, I decided to get the Makita for Christmas. ( I know..I'm not your typical woman, I'd rather have electronics and power tools) This way I can help my husband when we're putting up drywall instead of standing around.
On to the drill. I absolutely love it. It's lightweight, powerful and it's stubby in length. Many times my husband has a tough time getting into small areas. The LED light is great too, after ten seconds of non use, the light slowly goes away. My husband is impressed with the power. I am a petite woman and it fits my hand nicely. The only problem my husband finds is that he has a tendency to hit the forward/reverse button instead of the trigger. I don't have this problem, he must hold it different than I do. I think he's just not used to the difference from his Porter Cable. We're both quite pleased so far. I don't like bulky tools.

Update: After nearly two years of heavy use my husband has stolen my drill from me. He loves it. Last weekend, he drilled through a steel beam in the basement. He's hard on stuff, but the lil Makita drill has held up superbly. The batteries charge quickly as claimed too. I'd definitely buy this drill again." said Barb "is this heaven?" Great drill -- beware the batteries/charger!3
I bought this drill in about January or February. The drill itself is great, but something is flakey with either the included 1.5AH batteries or my charger as extended stays in the charger have killed both my batteries (both with and without the charger plugged in!). Makita does not sell 1.5AH batteries, only 3.0AH replacements which are nearly $100 and twice the size of the 1.5AH units.

I'd give this unit 5 stars if the batteries performed as they should have. I'm working with Makita on a battery and charger replacement as this is clearly a problem with this (my?) unit.
